Tokonoma Project (Under Construction)
Tokonoma is a recessed space in a traditional Japanese style room where art objects such as paintings, drawings, or sculptures are displayed. Unfortunately the space has been converted to a storage or closet in recent years as Japanese lifestyle has changed dramatically after the war; it is not even uncommon to find a traditional Japanese house or apartment without having Tokonoma these days.
I would like to explore new possibilities for this disappearing space, which has been dedicated to present artworks for more than 500 years, by curating a series of installations and performances in relation to life in Tokyo, Japan, Asia or life in general. The inaugural exhibition is scheduled to open in August 2017, so stay tuned and I will keep you updated.
